Strategies for Controlling Filamentous Bulking in Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Plants: The Old and the New

چکیده
Filamentous bulking and foaming are the most common settling problems experienced in activated sludge (AS) wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The quality of final effluent is poor during episodes foaming, which an environmental, human health economic burden. Remedial measures often ineffective, traditional non-specific methods such as chlorination may also negatively impact important functional bacterial species nitrifiers. Modifications to older well new strategies required for controlling filamentous bulking. Laboratory testing needs be followed by at scale WWTPs. This review describes bacteria responsible bulking, with a focus on their global distribution known factors selective growth specific filaments. Traditional biological control reviewed discussed. Research gaps identified aim promoting continued efforts establish effective

Reliability of Morphological Approach for Bulking Filamentous Bacteria Identification in Activated Sludge Plants
Activated sludge process is the most commonly applied technology for the biological treatment of wastewater. However, operational failures and deterioration of treatment efficiency due to extensive and uncontrolled growth of filamentous bacteria have been reported worldwide as common problems of this method. Over the years, various methods have been developed and applied for the identification ...
متن کاملFilamentous sludge bulking control by nano zero-valent iron in activated sludge treatment systems.
Sludge bulking causes loss of biomass in the effluent and deterioration of effluent water quality. This study explored the use of nano zero-valent iron (NZVI with an average particle size of 55 ± 11 nm) for sludge bulking control. In two Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) activated sludge treatment systems, a single dose of NZVI at the final concentration of 100 mg Fe per L in the mixed liquor red...
متن کاملFilamentous organism bulking in nutrient removal activated sludge systems
A model is outlined for the major biochemical respiratory mechanisms of a conceptualised heterotrophic facultative organism (representing the heterotrophic facultative mass of activated sludge) subjected to four different sets of conditions: steady-state aerobic, steady-state anoxic, steady-state aerobic changed to anoxic, and steady-state anoxic/anaerobic changed to aerobic. Proposals and impl...
متن کاملA New Framework for Analyzing Filamentous Bulking in Activated Sludge: Roles for Kinetics and Diffusion
Filamentous bulking is caused by the excessive growth of filaments over floc formers, and their competition was previously described using kinetic selection. However, recent studies reported that instead of kinetic selection, diffusion limitation inside the flocs may be the crucial factor in microbial selection. To clarify the roles of these factors in explaining filamentous bulking, a new conc...
متن کاملApplication of Ozone in Wastewater Treatment For Mitigation of Filamentous Bulking Sludge & Reduction of Pharmaceutical Discharge
Wastewater treatment with activated sludge is the most common way of treating wastewater. The process relies on bacteria converting nutrients, BOD and COD into biomass, CO2 and N2. Even though the configuration of activated sludge processes and wastewater treatment plants varies there are common problems which are shared. Filamentous bulking sludge is one problem that is widespread and disturbs...
